Symantec Endpoint Protection is a viable security tool that is provided by Stony Brook. There are two different types of clients (programs). Download the unmanaged client if you are using a non-university owned machine (your personal computer, your personal laptop, or any other machine that will not constantly be on-campus). Start your Norton AntiVirus or Symantec Endpoint Protection for Macintosh program and make sure that it is configured to scan all files. Run a full system scan. If any files are detected, click Repair (if available) or Delete.

Virus Protection
The UW-Madison licensed Symantec Endpoint Protection can be downloaded for use on personal computers through the Campus Software Library. Downloads for IT administrative staff are available at https://software.wisc.edu/cgi-bin/security/itadmin.cgi. SEP offers active threat protection as well as a full virus scan.

A common tactic among freeware publishers is to offer their products for free, but bundle them with PUPs in order to earn revenue. This tool will help you remove these types of programs. AdwCleaner also removes browser hijacking settings and extensions, and allows you to view results and choose which files to remove.

TDSSKiller
A rootkit for Windows systems is a program that penetrates into the system and intercepts the system functions (Windows API). It can effectively hide its presence by intercepting and modifying low-level API functions. Moreover it can hide the presence of particular processes, folders, files and registry keys. Some rootkits install its own drivers and services in the system (they also remain invisible). TDSSKiller, developed by Kaspersky lab, is designed to identify and remove rootkits.

MBAM is primarily a scanner that scans and removes malicious software, including rogue security software, adware, and spyware. MBAM scans in batch mode, rather than scanning all files opened, reducing interference if another on-demand anti-malware software is also running on the computer. MBAM is available in both a free and a paid version. The free version can be manually run by the user when desired, whereas the paid version can perform scheduled scans, automatically scan files when opened, block IP addresses of malicious web sites, and scan only those services, programs and device drivers that are currently in use.
